I want to share a small sampling of my favorite all-time quotations. I want to give my commentary on them and explain why I like them so much but I think it more appropriate for these sayings to stand on their own.

Human Nature:

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”                                -Eleanor Roosevelt

“Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains.”                                                                                                -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Social Truths:

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”                                              -Evelyn Beatrice Hall (in a biography of Voltaire)

“For from of old, death has been the lot of all men; but a people that                                                                               no longer trusts its rulers is lost indeed.”                                                                                          -Confucius (The Analects)

“When you’re at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on.”                                                                            -Theodore Roosevelt

“Not everthing that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”                          -Albert Einstein

“To be or not to be is not a question of compromise. Either you be or you don’t be.”                                        -Golda Meir

I realize that certain types of clutter really bother me while I recognize other types as the creative seeding necessary for great ideas. This summer, as I was preparing for college, I decided that I wanted to purge all the contents of my closet, leaving no survivors. Of course, my mother got in my way and prevented me from the veritable genocide I was about wreak upon my clothes. Meanwhile, in another corner of my room was a desk buried in years worth of scrap papers, personal notes, sketches, thoughts, and heavily annotated books.                                                Now don’t get me wrong; had that desk been covered in blank scrap paper I would have considered it clutter and unceremoniously disposed of it. For some reason, I am able to see past the substance of the clutter and value my thoughts and the memories associated with the mess. Life’s value comes from the people we share it with. Don’t buy things, seek experiences.” This is truly a great aspiration to live by.

Welcome to this website; I’m glad you’ve arrived. The title for this site comes from a Catholic prayer:

Lord, May everything we do begin with your inspiration, continue with your help, and reach perfection under your guidance. We ask through Christ our Lord.

I am committed to finding and realizing the genius within. This is the definition of human flourishing and the pursuit of a life worth living.
